Research in Florida

Health care providers may release health care information to research groups and other entities for medical research.1 Health care providers or facilities may release a patient’s HIV status for research purposes.2 Research groups must use or publish information received from health care provides only to advance medical research or education.3 Patient identifying information provided to research groups is confidential.4

The Department of Health may release or use the following medical information for research purposes:

  • Cancer registry;5
  • Known or suspected cases of sexually transmissible diseases;6
  • Maternal and child health reports;7
  • Vital records;8
  • Brain tumor registry;9
  • Brain or spinal cord injury program;10
  • Health status of rural residents;11 and
  • All other patient identifying information in health records.12

Patients have the right to provide to informed consent for the purposes of participating in experimental research.13

The Lawton Chiles Endowment Fund and the Department of Health’s James and Esther King Biomedical Research program is established to provide funding to tobacco-related research initiatives.14

Local health councils must collect data and conduct studies related to health care needs of their districts.15

A memory disorder clinical that conducts research on Alzheimer’s disease must conduct applied research and be service related.16
