Public Health Data Collection and Reporting in Tennessee

        Providers in Tennessee are either required or encouraged to report various health care events and conditions to registries and government entities across the state.  This includes the reporting of immunizations given to children1, abortions2, certain communicable diseases3, birth defects4, tuberculosis5, hearing screenings performed on infants6, sexually transmitted diseases7, patient abuse8, certain instances of trauma at designated trauma centers9, information to the National Nosocomial Infection Surveillance and National Healthcare Safety Network10, and brain trauma.11

        In addition, different types of health care facilities must also report certain designated data sets to the Department of Health, including hospitals12, nursing homes13, and ambulatory surgical centers.14
