Equity and Disparities in Florida

Patients have the right to access health care services or treatment regardless of their race, national origin, religion, handicap or another protected class and the right to access language interpretive services if the patient does not speak English.1

The Department of Health is responsible for establishing programs to reach the following groups:

  • High-risk pregnant women who suffer from substance use problems and HIV/AIDS and need prenatal care;2
  • Low-income women who need prenatal care;3
  • Ethnic/racial minorities who are at risk for HIV infection;4
  • Individuals who are at risk for developing prostate5 and breast cancer;6
  • Medically underserved groups like racial/ethnic minorities and rural residents7

The Agency for Health Care Administration is responsible for increasing the number of minority physicians in Florida.8

Health care facilities must submit demographic data to the Agency for Health Care Administration.9 Hospices must annually report demographic information to the Department of Elder Affairs.10
