Health Information Technology in Ohio

Ohio has implemented provisions governing the use of health information technology in an effort to improve the quality of health care provided in the state.  By January 1, 2013, every Medicaid provider must use an electronic claims submission process for all claims for reimbursement; this requirement does not apply to nursing facilities, intermediate care facilities for the mentally retarded, or Medicaid managed care organizations.1  Pharmacies may utilize a computerized record-keeping system for all records relating to the practice of pharmacy, including drug utilization review, patient counseling and prescription information, and must maintain a patient profile on such system.2  Any health professional who furnishes a controlled substance or other dangerous drug must electronically report information to the state board of pharmacy regarding the patient, the prescription issued and the drug dispensed.3
