Every patient or resident of a nursing home has the following minimum rights:
- To choose a personal physician;
- To be informed of the resident’s medical condition, unless medically contraindicated;
- To be given the opportunity to participate in the planning of the patient’s total care and medical treatment;
- To refuse treatment and to be informed of the consequences of that action;
- To refuse experimental treatment or drugs;
- To provide written consent to participate in research;
- To have records kept confidential and private;
- To provide written consent before releasing information about the resident, unless release is authorized by law;
- To exercise one’s independent judgment.
