The purpose of the birth defects registry is to provide information to public health officials on the existence of health and environmental hazards, help prevent birth defects and decrease the infant mortality rate. Health care practitioners, health care facilities, clinics and laboratories must report data to the birth defects registry. The birth defects registry is a component of the newborn screening case management system, including metabolic and hearing screening. Metabolic and hearing screening results must become part of the screening record. The Division of Public Health Newborn Screening Program must track and follow-up incomplete and abnormal cases.
