Maine requires that all malpractice claims filed against a provider be reported to the Board of Medicine.  In addition, a final disposition report is required to be filed with the Board if a malpractice claim results in a final judgment or award, a settlement involving payment, or a final disposition that does not involve payment.  The report must include the following information:

  • Name, address and policy number of the insured provider;
  • Date, place, and summary of the incident that gave rise to the malpractice claim;
  • Date of suit;
  • Date and amount of judgment or settlement;
  • Allocated claim expense;

It is a civil violation of an insurer to fail to report the final disposition of a malpractice claim to the Board of Medicine and can result in a fine of $1,000.
