All health care facilities are required to notify the occurrence of a sentinel event to the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Licensing and Regulatory Services the next business day. The notification to the Division must include the date and time sent, the name of the health care facility, and the type of sentinel event that occurred. The health care facility is also required to file a report within 45 days of the event. The report must include specific information about the sentinel event, as well as a root cause analysis. The law provides immunity for any person who reports the occurrence of a sentinel event.
