The Michigan Department of Community Health must develop and maintain a statewide trauma data collection system.  The Department must adopt, at a minimum, the national trauma data elements.  The other required data elements are the destination medical record number and the patient care report number.  As part of the trauma system, the Department must provide and maintain the confidentiality and protection of collected patient data.

The health care facility or hospital (defined as all those facilities that have an emergency department) must submit trauma data to the Department on a quarterly basis.  The initial data submission applies only to trauma patients who have been injured due to a criminal act.  For these patients, the health care facility must submit to the Department, a patient identification number, the injury code, date of treatment, and the facility’s federal identification number.
