Physicians may prescribe, administer, and dispense antibiotics to persons with Lyme disease so long as the physician documents the diagnosis and treatment in the patient’s medical record. The Rhode Island board of medical licensure and discipline may not discipline physicians that comply with the recordkeeping requirements for prescribing long-term antibiotic therapy to persons with Lyme disease. However, the board may discipline a physician that “prescribes, administers, or dispenses long-term antibiotic therapy for non-therapeutic purposes,” fails to monitor the care of a patient receiving long-term antibiotics, or fails to comply with the recordkeeping requirements.
