The state maintains a cancer registry for the recording of all cases of malignant disease and other tumors and precancerous diseases that are diagnosed in Indiana.  Various practitioners are required to report each confirmed case of these conditions, within 6 months of diagnosis, including:

  • Physicians
  • Dentists
  • Hospitals
  • Medical laboratories
  • Ambulatory outpatient surgical centers
  • Health facilities

Information obtained by the department concerning individual cancer patients is for the confidential use of the state department only.  However, the department may grant any person involved in legitimate research activity access to confidential information concerning individual cancer patients if the researcher has adequate safeguards in place to protect the identity of the patients whose records the researcher will be reviewing.  If the researcher wishes to use the names of individual patients, he or she must obtain the written consent of both the patient and the patient’s attending physician.
