Security of Health Information in Vermont

Vermont law has safeguards to protect the security of patients’ medical information. Health care providers must ensure that electronic health records are designed to ensure confidentiality of patient records.1 Vermont is responsible for addressing confidentiality and security issues in its statewide health information technology plan.2 The Department of Health’s patient safety surveillance and improvement system must ensure that all electronic and paper information reported from health care providers are maintained in a secure manner.3 Any person who improperly discloses or accesses patient information is criminally or civilly liable.4
