Security of Health Information in New Hampshire

New Hampshire law has safeguards to protect the security of patients’ medical information. Health care providers and facilities must protect the confidentiality of patient information by storing paper records in a secure area, discarding paper records by shredding, and ensuring that electronic medical records are designed to prevent data loss, improper disclosure, or tampering of information.1 New Hampshire is also responsible for designing its health information exchanges to ensure the confidentiality of patient information.2 Any person who improperly discloses or accesses patients’ medical information may face criminal or civil liability or face discipline from the appropriate licensing board or agency.3
