The Department of Health and Senior Services must protect the identity of the patient, physician, health care provider, hospital, lab, or other health care facility involved in reporting incidents of cancer.  Patient identifying information may only be released with the patient’s written consent, identifying information of the physician may only be released with the physician’s written consent, and identifying information of the hospital or health care facility may only be released with the facility’s consent.  However, written consent may only be requested when disclosure of the person or facility’s identity is necessary for meaningful cancer research.  In addition, the state may enter into data exchange agreements with cancer registries of other states.
