The purpose laid out in the statute for creating a telehealth commission is to encourage the adoption and development of a statewide health information technology system.  Such a system should provide and support health care delivery, diagnosis, treatment, and the transfer of medical data when there is distance between the provider and patient or when there are multiple providers involved.  It should also address the lack of providers in medically underserved areas, and attract medical providers to rural areas.   Additionally, such a system should strengthen the health infrastructure and reduce costs.
