All patients are allowed a copy of their medical record after being discharged from a state-licensed hospital.  In order to obtain copies of his or her record, the patient must submit a written request to the hospital.  After a request has been made, the hospital must provide the records within a reasonable time.  Additional requirements may apply if the patient is a minor, if releasing the medical record to the patient would be detrimental to his or her health, and if the record contains information pertaining to participation in a drug trial.  Finally, the hospital may charge the patient for reasonable costs associated with making copies of the record.  These charges may not be higher than 10 dollars for the first page, and 35 cents for each additional page.
