ONC issues proposed rule for 2015 edition of EHR certification criteria

On February 21, 2014, the US Department of Health and Human Services Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) issued a notice of proposed rulemaking for the next edition (the "2015 Edition") of electronic health record (EHR) technology certification criteria. Compliance with the 2015 edition would be voluntary; developers who certified EHR technology to the 2014 Edition would not need to recertify to the 2015 Edition in order for their users to participate in the Meaningful Use program.

ONC will accept public comment on the rulemaking until April 28, 2014. The rule is available as a PDF here and will be published in the Federal Register on February 26, 2014. The final rule is expected in summer of 2014.
