Care Coordination/Care Management in New Mexico

        New Mexico has instituted a number of laws in order to allow patients to make decisions about their healthcare.  Informed consent is required in order to perform an HIV test on any individual except in limited circumstances.1  Consent can also be obtained from a legal guardian or authorized representative if the individual is unable to consent.2

        The Health Policy Commission is required to issue consumer health information reports so that individuals can evaluate the quality of care of state healthcare providers and facilities.3  Patients have the right to choose their own hospital or practitioner within the coverage of their insurance policy.4 New Mexico has also established a health information technology system which provides for the transfer of medical data between providers and patient.5
