Reporting cases of cancer - 28 Pa. Code § 27.31

Each case of cancer must be reported in accordance with the following:

  • To the cancer registry maintained by the department of health’s bureau of health statistics and research by hospitals, clinical laboratories or other health care facility providing screening, diagnostic or therapeutic services for cancer to cancer patients within 180 days of the discharge of an inpatient or within 180 days following diagnosis or initiation of treatment of an outpatient;
  • To the cancer registry by health care practitioners providing screening, diagnostic or therapeutic services to cancer patients for cancer within five work days of a diagnosis.

The department of health may access the records of any facility, individual or agency providing screening, diagnostic or therapeutic services for cancer to patients.  Reports submitted are confidential and may not be open to public inspection or dissemination; information for specific research purposes may be released in accordance with established procedures.
